The dial

Eight settings. Turn it and see.

This is the selector on the wall of every bay. Tap a position — or use the arrow keys — to see what it sends down the wand.

Position 1 of 8

Rinse

High-pressure softened water. The workhorse — use it between every other setting, and finish with it.

Tap a position · ← → to step through

And next to the dial, a pause button

It isn't one of the eight settings — it's its own button, and it stops your paid time dead for 30 seconds. You get three per wash. It's for the gaps you'd otherwise be paying for: walking round to the far side, moving the mats, swapping to the next setting, or checking you actually got the back bumper. Press it again when you're ready — or just wait out the thirty seconds — and the clock picks up where it left off.

How it works

Pull in, pay, pick a setting.

No attendant, no queue, no app to download. The bay is yours until your time runs out — and you can stop the clock three times along the way.

01

Pull into a free bay

Three bays, all identical. The sign at the mouth of each one tells you whether it's vacant before you commit to the turn.

02

Tap or drop a coin

Tap, insert, or coins — whichever you have on you. Your time appears on the display and starts counting.

03

Turn the dial, pull the trigger

Switch between settings as often as you like. Add more time at any point without losing what's left.

04

Hit pause between steps

Thirty seconds with the clock stopped, three times per wash. Walk round the car, move the mats, change settings — without paying for the walk.

Why it's different

Most of what makes a wash good, you can't see.

The water is treated before it ever reaches the wand. That is the difference between a car that's clean and a car that's clean and spot-free.

Softened water, every bay

Lethbridge water is hard — around 14 grains. Ours is softened before it's pressurised, so the minerals that leave white marks never reach your paint.

Spot-free final rinse

Reverse-osmosis water with the dissolved solids taken out. Let it drip dry and it leaves nothing behind — no towel, no spots.

Heated water and heated chemicals

Warm water lifts road salt and oily winter film that cold water slides straight over. The soap, pre-soak and wax are warmed too — cold chemistry barely works below freezing, and that is the difference between a wash and a rinse in February.

Bug removal that doesn't need scrubbing

Highways 3, 4 and 5 all meet here, and in summer your front end shows it. The warm pre-soak breaks down what glues bug splatter to paint, then the pressure lifts it off — so you are not scrubbing dried bugs with a brush and taking the clear coat with them.

Heated bays all winter

Southern Alberta does not go easy on a car wash. The bays are heated and the lines are protected, so we're open on the cold mornings when you actually need us.

Genuinely 24 hours

Lit, monitored and open at 3am. Shift workers, road-trip grime, the night before an inspection — the bays don't close.

Doors that open and close themselves

Each bay door opens as you arrive and closes behind you. The heat stays in, the wind stays out, and the grit it would have blown back onto a car you just cleaned stays outside with it.

A pause button, because time is money

Stop the clock for 30 seconds, up to three times a wash. For walking round to the far side, moving the mats, changing settings, or checking you actually got the back bumper — the gaps you would otherwise be paying for.

The short history

You might know this place as LA Auto Spa.

It washed cars on Mayor Magrath for years. Then it closed, and sat.

Same bays

Three of them, in the same spot on the same busy road. If you used to wash your car here, you know exactly where you're going.

Rebuilt inside

Heated bays, automatic doors, a water softener, heated water and chemicals, and a reverse-osmosis spot-free rinse. New controls on every bay.

Now AK Auto Spa

New name, new owners, open 24 hours. The wash your parents used, working the way it should have in the first place.

And there's art on the walls

The bays are hand-painted, not bare concrete. It is a small thing, and it makes the ten minutes you spend in there considerably better than the ten minutes you'd spend in a grey box. Most people photograph it on the first visit. The kids in the back seat will have opinions.

Pricing

One dollar a minute. That's the whole price list.

Every setting costs the same — soap, wax, triple foam, vacuum, air. Take four minutes or twenty. No packages, no upsell, no membership.

Coin

$1.00 / min

Loonies and toonies. Add more at any time without losing your remaining minutes.

Tap & card

$1.00 / min

Tap, chip or phone. Time is added the moment it approves, and you're charged only for what you start.

Vacuum & air

$1.00 / min

Same dial, same clock. Finish the inside before your time runs out.

Is there a 24-hour car wash in Lethbridge?

Yes. AK Auto Spa at 108 Mayor Magrath Drive North is a self-serve car wash open 24 hours a day, every day, including holidays. All three bays are lit and heated, so the wash works at 3am in January as well as it does on a summer afternoon.

Is AK Auto Spa the old LA Auto Spa?

Yes. AK Auto Spa is the former LA Auto Spa on Mayor Magrath Drive North in Lethbridge. The wash sat closed for a while and has reopened under new ownership with the same three bays rebuilt: heated bays, automatic doors, softened and heated water, heated chemicals and a reverse-osmosis spot-free rinse.

Where can I wash my car in Lethbridge in the winter?

AK Auto Spa's three bays on Mayor Magrath Drive North are heated, with automatic doors that close behind you to keep the heat in and the wind off the car. The water and the chemicals are both heated, which matters in a southern Alberta winter: cold soap barely lifts road salt, and warm soap does. The water lines are freeze-protected so the bays stay open through a cold snap.

How much does a self-serve car wash cost in Lethbridge?

AK Auto Spa charges $1.00 per minute, which is the entire price list -- the same rate for the pressure wand, the vacuum and the air. You pay only for the time you use, you can add more at any point without losing the minutes you have left, and the 30-second pause lets you stop the clock between steps.

What is the pause button on a self-serve car wash?

At AK Auto Spa the pause button stops your paid time for 30 seconds, up to three times per wash. It is there for the gaps that normally cost you money: walking round to the other side of the car, moving the mats, swapping the dial to the next setting, or checking whether you actually got the back bumper. The clock restarts when you do.

How do you get bugs off a car?

Soften them first and never scrub them dry. At AK Auto Spa, select the pre-soak, coat the front end, bumper and mirrors, and give it a minute to dwell -- the warm chemical breaks down the proteins that glue bug splatter to the paint. Then lift it off with the high-pressure rinse rather than a brush. Dried-on bugs scrubbed dry will scratch clear coat, and on a hot day they bond harder the longer they sit.

What does a spot-free rinse do, and do I still need to towel dry?

A spot-free rinse uses reverse-osmosis water with the dissolved minerals taken out, so when it evaporates it leaves nothing behind. At AK Auto Spa you can finish on the spot-free rinse and let the car drip dry without water spots, which is the whole point -- no towel, and no white marks on dark paint. Ordinary tap water in Lethbridge is hard enough to spot a car badly as it dries.

Why does a car wash need softened water?

Lethbridge draws its water from the Oldman River and it is hard -- around 14 grains per gallon. Those dissolved minerals are what leave white marks as the car dries, and they also make soap work poorly, so you use more of it for less result. AK Auto Spa softens the water before it is pressurised, so the minerals never reach your paint in the first place.

Can I pay by card or tap at AK Auto Spa?

Yes. AK Auto Spa takes tap, chip, phone wallets and coins in all three bays. Time is added the moment the payment approves, and you can top up mid-wash without losing the time you have already bought.

Do the car wash bays have automatic doors?

Yes. Each of AK Auto Spa's three bays has an automatic door that opens for you and closes behind you. It keeps the heat inside the bay in winter and keeps the wind from blowing spray and grit back onto a car you have just cleaned.

Does AK Auto Spa have vacuums?

Yes. AK Auto Spa has vacuum and high-volume air in every bay, on the same dial and the same $1.00-per-minute clock as the wash, so you can finish the inside without moving the car or paying separately. The air is for blowing water out of door jambs, mirrors and trim before it dries in them and runs down the paint later.

What are the wash settings at AK Auto Spa?

The dial in each bay has eight positions: pre-soak, wash soap, rinse, wax, foam brush, triple foam conditioner, vacuum and air. A good order is pre-soak first and let it dwell, then soap top to bottom, then rinse, then wax, and finish on the spot-free rinse so the car dries without spots.

Where is AK Auto Spa in Lethbridge?

AK Auto Spa is at 108 Mayor Magrath Drive North, Lethbridge, Alberta -- on the city's busiest north-south road, in the corridor where Highways 3, 4 and 5 come together. It is an easy in-and-out stop on the way to wherever you were already going, and the phone number is (587) 394-2195.

Is a self-serve wash better than an automatic car wash?

A self-serve bay gives you control an automatic tunnel cannot: you choose how long the pre-soak dwells on the bugs, you get the wheel arches and the sills that a tunnel misses, and nothing mechanical touches your paint except the foam brush, which you can skip. It costs less too. The trade is your own ten minutes. At AK Auto Spa those ten minutes are in a heated bay with the door shut, which is the part that makes doing it yourself in a Lethbridge winter reasonable.

Can I wash a truck or a van at AK Auto Spa?

Pickups, SUVs and vans are routine in all three bays at AK Auto Spa, and the high-pressure wand reaches a full-size truck roof without a step. If you are bringing something unusually tall or long -- a dually with a canopy, a cube van, a trailer still hitched -- call (587) 394-2195 first and we will tell you honestly whether it will clear the bay door.

What are the murals in the car wash bays?

The bay walls at AK Auto Spa are hand-painted rather than bare concrete. It is a small thing that makes the ten minutes you spend in there considerably better, and it is the reason most people take a photo on their first visit.
